What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is a general term that refers to inflammation of the skin. It isn’t a single condition but rather a group of skin disorders that cause redness, swelling, itching, and irritation.

Common types of dermatitis include atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis (triggered by allergens or irritants), seborrheic dermatitis (often affecting oily areas like the scalp), and dyshidrotic dermatitis (which causes blisters on hands and feet).

While not contagious, dermatitis can be uncomfortable, recurrent, and disruptive to daily life if left untreated.

What are the symptoms of dermatitis?

Symptoms of dermatitis can vary based on the type and severity but generally include:

  • Red, inflamed, or dry patches of skin
  • Itching or burning sensations
  • Thickened or scaly skin
  • Blisters or oozing lesions
  • Skin cracking or flaking
  • Swelling in the affected area

In chronic cases, scratching can lead to skin infections or long-term skin changes, such as thickened or leathery patches.

What causes dermatitis?

Dermatitis can be triggered by a range of factors, depending on the type. Common causes include:

  • Allergens (e.g., pollen, pet dander, foods)
  • Irritants (e.g., soaps, detergents, chemicals)
  • Genetics and a family history of allergies or eczema
  • Stress and hormonal changes
  • Environmental conditions like extreme heat or cold
  • Immune system dysfunction

Atopic dermatitis is often linked to other allergic conditions like asthma or hay fever. Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin directly reacts to a specific substance.

Your Bioinfusion Center practitioner can help determine the cause, which is key to managing flare-ups and preventing recurrence.

How do IV infusions treat dermatitis?

The Bioinfusion Center team recommends IV infusion therapy in cases of severe or treatment-resistant dermatitis, particularly when topical treatments or oral medications haven’t provided sufficient relief.

Biologic medications delivered through IV infusion can help by targeting the immune response that drives inflammation. These medications block specific inflammatory pathways, reducing symptoms such as itching, redness, and skin thickening.

IV therapy can also include nutrients, such as vitamins and antioxidants, to support overall skin health and boost immune function. If you have chronic dermatitis, IV infusions offer a personalized and effective approach to managing flare-ups and maintaining healthier skin over time.

You don’t have to suffer from dermatitis. Book an evaluation today by phone or online.
